Being a hefty lover of nature, Coorg was always on my list of top priority locations to be covered. In some of the stories that caught hold of my childhood fascinations, Coorg was a killer location. According to the descriptions of Malayalam writer S K Pottakkadu, Coorg was a place where nature enjoyed its rich heritage untouched by civilization. My second search that brought me to this place is the google box with "Top Honeymoon destinations and hotels in India". The Tamara Resort, Coorg was listed in the top 20 honeymoon destinations in India according to Conde Nast Traveller India and I was completely blown off when i visited the website of The Tamara resort. (http://www.thetamara.com). It was an alluring site that gave a live feeling of being in one of the natures paradise. That was the brief introduction I had in my mind when i got a chance to visit my dream destination.
I reached this natures delight on a chilling winter dawn. The climate was so cold and my hotel president provided all the comfort that we needed along with an excellent traditional kodagu breakfast. The atmosphere was pleasant and the temperature was normal as the sun rose to wish us. My first visit was to Harangi Dam, a dispute area between two states on the Kaveri river issue. Dams are always an ecstasy for a civil engineer. On technical terms Harangi was a concrete cum earth dam and the water level was very less. The dam and catchment area are meant strictly for industrial visits. Nothing attractive for a casual tourist.
My second visit was to Bamboo forest, a busy tourist spot in coorg. As the name says it, this place is a bamboo covered forest area with small brooks that joins kaveri river. Boating facility and elephant rides are available. Deers also reign in this forest. Its just a 15 minutes walk through a demo forest made purely for tourists. But i love the presence of water there and the surrounding areas provide some good shopping.
Then our team visited one of the best spot in coorg on the banks of Kaveri for river rafting. This spot is good only for a big team. A journey through river kaveri wearing the life jackets and a plunge in its water for an hour. The atmosphere too is calm and peaceful that guarantees a pleasant day.
The next attraction at Coorg is the Golden temple and the Tibetan settlement. This place was actually an amazement to me. Its not just about the Buddhist temples and architecture, but also a lifestyle that was totally alien to us. The temple campus had a school and hostel for teaching children from around the world . The dressing and the thrills of the little monks were a pleasure to the eyes. And cant forget to mention the shopping near Golden Temple arena which provides a peep into Tibetan culture.
In short, my Coorg journey was an escape from this monotonous lifestyle. It gave me a breath of fresh air, new culture and a little divinity. But for a green panther who has already visited the queens of south like Munnar, Wayanad and Ooty, this journey was just mediocre. The main reason i would say being the haze in the greenery and the median temperature. Yet I would love to give one more try to this beautiful destination during the monsoons :)
